Congestive heart failure is when the heart is unable to pump an adequate amount of oxygen rich blood to the body. This may be due to a weakened heart muscle from a heart attack or other diseases which can cause stiffening of the heart or increase the body’s demands for oxygen. These diseases lead to the destruction of cardiac cells such as cardiomyocytes, vascular endothelial cells and the smooth muscle cell.
Stem cells are have the potential to self-generate themselves into many different cell types.
Stem cells that have been collected are transplanted into the patient. These stem cells can then regenerate themselves into new cardiac cells with the aim to restore the hearts ability to pump an adequate blood supply around the body.
