Brachytherapy (also known as internal radiotherapy or curietherapy) is a technique which uses radioactive seeds to deliver radiotherapy directly into the cancerous prostate gland. The seeds are inserted into the prostate and produce low level, continuous radiation for one year, destroying cancerous cells. The seeds are approximately the size of half a grain of rice and as only a small area is affected by the radiation from each seed, very little radiation reaches adjacent normal organs.
