Optical urethrotomy (also known as direct visual internal urethrotomy) is generally performed with the patient under general or major regional anesthesia. This is used to treat strictures of the urethra. This procedure involves telescopic inspection of the urethra and bladder with incision of a stricture (narrowing caused by scar tissue) using a visual knife or laser fibre.
