Acute myocardial infarction, a heart attack, is the result of insufficient blood supply to the heart muscle. This leads to the destruction of heart muscle cells called cardiomyocytes. These cells are required in the contraction of the ventricles. Stem cells have the potential to self-generate themselves into different cell types. Autologus stem cell therapy is when the patients own stem cells are used to treat the condition. Bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cells are collected from the patient and then frozen and stored until they are needed. Alternatively, the stem cells originate from a donor, this is the allongenic approach. Stem cells that have been collected are transplanted into the patient. These stem cells can then regenerate themselves into new cardiomyocyte cells with the aim to restore and the damaged cardiac tissue. The heart is then able to regain its power.
