Osteogenesis imperfecta is a genetic bone disorder that causes bones to break easily, without an obvious cause. Dominant Osteogenesis means that there is too little type I collagen as a result of a mutation of the type 1 collagen genes. This deficiency causes defective connective tissue. Stem cells are produced in the bone marrow. They are immature cells that have the potential to self-generate themselves into many different cell types in the body. Autologus stem cell therapy is when the patients own stem cells are used to treat the condition. Bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cells are collected from the patient and then frozen and stored until they are needed. These stem cells are then transplanted back into the patient where they can then self-generate. They would replace the cells that produce the abnormal collagen and increase the amount of osteoblasts and bone forming cells.
