Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system. There are two types of lymphoma, Hodgkin Lymphoma and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. Hodgkin Lymphoma is characterised by the presence of the Reed-Sternberg cell which are not usually found in other types of lymphoma. Autologus stem cell therapy is when the patients own stem cells are used to treat the condition. Alternatively, with the allongenic approach, the patient receives a high dose of chemotherapy. The stem cells that have previously been collected from a donor are then transplanted to replace what has been destroyed. The healthy stem cells can then develop into new blood cells. Another autologus approach is Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplants. In this procedure the patients blood is passed through a piece of equipment that removes the stem cells. The patient then undergoes treatment to kill any cancer cells and the stem cells are transplanted back into the patient.
