Cancer Treatment Options

As so much cancer patient treatment and care is extremely intensive and very expensive, the option of overseas treatment and recuperation is a choice that is growing in popularity.

Global advances in medical technology and training have resulted in high quality cancer treatment and rehabilitation centers being established all over the world, offering the international quality of care for cancer patients at significant cost savings. The lower costs are not the result of sub-standard care or facilities, but rather the significantly lower cost of living in many destination countries. Waiting times for procedures in quality, overseas medical facilities are also often non-existent, which obviously adds to their attractiveness. Cancer treatment centers and clinics in many European and Asian countries now offer state-of-the-art technology and highly qualified English-speaking medical practitioners, many of whom have trained in the UK or the US. Excellent private and public health treatment services now operate in a range of countries across the globe offering quality surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and other cancer treatments.

Post-treatment rehabilitation costs can also be significantly lower in many foreign destinations with absolutely no compromise in the quality of care. In fact, these destinations can actually offer a better quality of life and the opportunity for recuperation in a warm and exotic overseas location.

About Cancer

The term "cancer" encompasses a range of diseases - there are over 200 different types of cancer - that all originate in the body's cells. In cancer sufferers, old cells don't die and the body's cells multiply at accelerated rates, spreading throughout the body via its blood and lymph systems. The extra unwanted cells then form tumors.

Cancer affects people of all ages, from all walks of life, but the risk factor does increase with age. In 2007, 7.6 million people or 13% of all human deaths were as a result of cancer. The primary cancer categories are carcinoma (cancers that originate in the skin or the tissue lining of the body's internal organs and are the most common form); leukemia (cancers that begin in the body's blood-forming tissues like bone marrow); lymphoma (cancers that originate in the immune system's cells); sarcoma (cancers forming in muscle, bone, cartilage, fat or other supportive body tissue); and central nervous system cancers, which begin in the brain or spinal cord tissue.

Cancer Treatment

With so many forms of cancer, the methods of treatment for patients also vary according to their particular condition. The various forms of cancer have their own particular risk factors, as well as diagnostic procedures and relevant treatments. The primary conventional treatment protocols for treating cancer include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and immunotherapy/biologic therapy. Other cancer treatments may include adjuvant therapy and prophylactic therapy, which is used as a preventative treatment or for a patient whose cancer treatment has been successful but there is a risk that the disease may reappear. Palliative surgery is also used where the cancer is not treatable but the primary aim is to lessen the discomfort of the patient, and in some cases to prolong the patient's life. While cancer traditionally has had a high mortality rate, continued advances in medical treatment and care mean that many forms of the disease no longer have to result in death.

Additional factors to consider when treating a patient's cancer include: the patient's medical history and their general health; the type, extent, location, and stage of the cancer; as well as the patient's ability to cope with particular procedures and medications. Cancer treatment can severely impact the patient's quality of life and some treatments can also result in rather severe side-effects. Chemotherapy affects the entire body, not just the targeted area, and hair loss and upset stomachs are two of the most common side-effects of the treatment. By making an informed decision on the right destination for the specific treatment required, cancer sufferers can benefit from a more suitable environment for recovery, as well as treatment.
