Calf Implants

What is calf implant surgery?
Calf implant surgery involves the insertion of implants into the lower legs to create a more ‘shapely’ look, or help create balance for those who suffer from physical or genetic deformities.
Who benefits from calf implant surgery?
Both men and women who are unhappy with their calves may wish to undergo calf implant surgery. Calf implants can also be considered to correct hereditary and physical defects including polio and spina bifida, among others, to achieve anatomical balance.
Types of implants
The majority of implants are made from silicone.
Procedure
Calf implant surgery is performed under general anesthetic and can take between 1-2 hours per calf. An incision is made behind the knee along the crease and the implant is then placed and fitted into the pocket to create the desired look. The incision is then closed with sutures and bandaged.
Recovery period
Calves may feel stiff, sore and look swollen and bruised but there should not be much discomfort. Normal physical activities may be resumed a few days after surgery, and it is advised to take a couple of weeks off work. Strenuous exercise should not be carried out for around six weeks after calf implant surgery.
Risks
While rare, there is a chance of infection, bleeding inside the calf and collection of fluid following calf implant surgery. Scarring may also occur but will fade with time. Implants may shift, and very rarely weaken the nearby muscle.
