Lap Band Surgery (also known as adjustable gastric banding) involves the fitting of a laparoscopic adjustable gastric band around the stomach via a surgerical procedure. It is designed for obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater and is a restrictive device implanted to reduce appetite. The gastric band is an inflatable silicone prosthetic device that is placed around the top portion of the stomach, usually via laparoscopic surgery.
