Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a surgical procedure to remove part of a prostate cancer that is putting pressure on the urethra. Pressure on the urethra can cause problems with urination. It is not able to cure the cancer but can help to alleviate symptoms. The operation is also carried out on patients who have non- cancerous (benign)swelling of the prostate. A small tube is passed up the urethra via the penis. The tube has a light, magnifying lens and a cutting instrument which allows the surgeon the see inside the urethra and cut out part of the tissue that is causing the problems.
